Tesla is reportedly behind on its pledge to build 5,000 Optimus bots this year
Tesla is significantly behind schedule in its effort to produce 5,000 Optimus bots in 2025, according to a new report from The Information. With eight months of the year gone, sources say the company has manufactured only a few hundred robots. This raises questions about whether the target will be pushed back or output will be increased.
The news follows a weak Q2 earnings report, in which Tesla revealed a 12% drop in total revenue amid slumping electric vehicle sales and softer performance in its energy division. Elon Musk announced that production of the third-generation Optimus robot should begin in early 2026.
Musk also reiterated his goal of scaling up to one million units per year within five years, calling the target “reasonable.”
Past promises from Musk have followed similar patterns. His projected timeline for mass-producing robotaxis by 2020 and then 2024 has yet to be fulfilled.
