Amazon disputes report that it raised prices of popular items since Trump took office
Amazon is disputing a Wall Street Journal report that suggested tariffs under the Trump administration drove up prices on low-cost essentials. The WSJ tracked 2,500 items and said prices rose 5% on average from January 20 to July 1.
Amazon’s response claimed the findings were misleading, noting that certain products highlighted in the report were on sale in January, making later price increases unrelated to tariffs or inflation. The company cited examples such as Dove deodorant and Yogi Tea.
The retailer added that its dynamic pricing system naturally leads to frequent price changes, which complicates point-in-time analysis.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, consumer prices overall rose modestly in June—up 0.3% from May and 2.7% compared with last year.
