Apple appeals EU’s €500M fine over App Store payment restraints

Apple has taken legal action to overturn a €500 million fine levied by EU regulators over its App Store payment practices. The European Commission fined the company in April, alleging it did not comply with the Digital Markets Act’s requirement to allow outside payment options.

The DMA seeks to limit the dominance of major tech firms by giving app developers more control over payment methods. Regulators said Apple’s restrictions fell short of the law’s standards.

Apple’s late June policy changes introduced a tiered fee system for EU developers using alternative payments. Despite this, the company argues that the fine is excessive and the Commission’s interpretation of the law is overly broad.

In comments to TechCrunch, Apple described the ruling as harmful to both developers and users, insisting that it complies with legal obligations.
